I really, really love it when I listen to an episode that I know absolutely nothing about in advance, and it turns out to be incredibly well-written.

“The Game” was one of those episodes for me - what started out as a silly sports parody turned into an intensely well-written political intrigue plot. The episode has a ton of interesting characters, a really good script and (very surprisingly) a sort of proto River Song character played by William Russell. And it’s even completely standlone. Definitely one of my all-time favourite Doctor Who stories.

I loved “The Game” but it was so incredibly dark (unexpectedly so) that I have trouble recommending it to people, particularly as a first audio. People should definitely check it out, though.
